Closeout Drill

By: Tommy

The Closeout is a very important defensive skill each player has to do good.
Since we cannot draw pictures here of players, I will try to explain it.
A opposing player has just recieved a pass. Your defensive player has to 'cover' him. He runs to the offensive player, and can 'jump' to him from a couple of steps out. He should 'jump to the ball'[player] with both hands up in the air.
He should also stay back a arms lenght from the offensive player.
In a defensive stance,he should have hands high if ball is high. Hands low,out to the side if ball is low. Hands out to the side mid-way if ball is midway.
Don`t just stand there with hands up in the air no matter where the ball is.

Closeout Drill
Form 2 lines of basketball players at the top of the three point line. Line 1 will be to the left anf line 2 to the right. The person at the top of the circle is a coach with 2 basketballs. Set 2 defenders up on the low blocks.

The coach passes the first basketball to the player on his/her right. The defender runs out fast and closes out while the offensive player moves the ball around ,up and down,as if trying to get a pass off. The defender must move hands quickly and stay with the ball.

Give each player 10 seconds closing out and have the offensive player return the ball to the coach, then the defender runs to back of line while the offensive player goes to the low block and plays defense.

You may want to add time for each individual drill to get things working smoothly. You keep switiching side to side. Have a additional coach help if needed.

Tips:
1-have players closeout aggressively
2-keep hands with ball,high,low,etc.
3-approach with a jump stop with high hands
4-players may and should yell " ball ball ball" while closing out.
5-Defensive players and offensive players should not be standing straight up ,but in a good position, flexing at the waist and knees.
6-all players hustle on this drill
7-offensive players must stand still,no traveling or dribbling.
