Fungo Drill

By: Bill Bathe

Baseball fungo drills. I know what you are thinking. What will fungo hitting do for me? It's simple. The fungo is a good tool for learning how to stay inside the ball. And i will explain. Let's get started.

What is a fungo? Just to review, a fungo is a small diameter bat that is used for infield and outfield practice. Have you ever watched the coach as he hits ground balls to the infielders, and how he hits fly balls to the outfielders? Or how he is able to hit pop-ups to the catcher? He just didn't learn that over night. Try it sometime, it's not easy!

With a fungo in your hand, toss up a ball and try to hit an easy line drive with it. That's right, i will repeat. With a fungo, toss a ball up in the air, and than hit an easy line drive. If you have any flaws in your swing you will not be able to do these baseball fungo drills.

If your swing is even a little off, trying to keep the hands inside your approach and hit a line drive can be difficult.Remember, in this baseball fungo drill, the trick is to be fluid. Remember the other drills I have shown you and incorporate this into your arsenal of drills as well. You'll be surprised when you first try the fungo drill, it's not as easy as you think.

Just a reminder about not only the fungo drill, but the other drills on this site. They are meant to help you establish a good foundation with which to build upon. They are a collection of drills that i have used throughout my career. And they are drills that were the most beneficial for my development. They have been hand picked out of many years and sweat and tears of hard work. And i wish to pass them onto you.
