A linebacker football pass coverage practice drill. Objective - Teach how to read pass routes. Action - Put a safety back 15 yards in the middle, a corner about 12-14 yards back on the right hash and a third defender 5 yards off the ball. Line up a player in the tight end position on the right side. The linebacker who'll run the drill first lines up between the short defender and the tight end in a proper stance. The coach tells the tight end to run a flat, cross or vertical route. At the snap, the quarterback takes a 5 or 7-step drop as the linebacker reacts to the tight end's route. The QB should throw the ball to the safey, corner or dump it off so the LB has to square up and make a break on it. Coaching Details - Check stance and drop technique. Emphasize read, react and break on the ball. Run the football linebacker drill to both sides.
