A baseball or softball situation drill. You probably know this one, but it is unlikely you do it with the intensity needed for real learning. Coach, stand at home plate with a fungo and a few balls. Get a bunch of runners, outfielders and pitchers are often free for some great conditioning(!). Draw a line behind which the runners must start when you hit the ball. Hit ground balls to infielders and tell the runners to beat the throw to first. Then work on feeds to 2B Work on your pitchers fielding practice (PFPs) with live runners. This is a pet peeve of mine. Pitchers do their fielding practice so lazily most of the time Practicing it under pressure can be the difference between a World Series championship and second place. In 2001 the Yankee would likely have won if in Game 7 Mariano Rivera had not made an errant throw to second base. The heat was on – unlike anything most pitchers practice – and he rushed it. Extra infielders can run for this drill as well as outfielders. Variation. If you don’t have enough runners, mix a runner in every other or every third ground ball you hit. Now switch and hit to the outfielders (of course you could do them first if you’d like).
