The Perfect Game

By: Coach Comer

A baseball or softball infield drill.

This is best played with only a few palyers at a time, most likely no more than 4 at a time.

Coach hits the ball to the first player in line, grounder, chopper, fly ball etc. The player must field the ball cleanly and make a good throw back to the coach or designated person. The object of the game is to get at least 18 outs in a row for a 6 inning game, 27 for a 9 inning game (perfect game) without an error.

Run the drill with either one or two coaches hitting balls to the fielders. Players will need only to have the fielding gloves for this drill. You can also use a pancake mit to ensure that the players are using two hands when fielding the ball. Create one or two lines of paleyes probabln no more that four deep.

By participating in this drill, players will improve their ability to field different types of balls hit their way and will also benefit by learnign to make good throws to the designeated base or coach.

Coaches remind the players to keep their head, butt and gloves down, step toward the target when throwing and make a good, clean throw.

As a variation of the drill, roll the ball slowly instead of hitting it in order for the players to practice fielding the ball with their bare hand.

Watch how the players use their bodies to get in front of the ball (or not).
Watch to see if the palyers are lifting their head (a perfect coaching moment)
Teach them to start with the glove down and come up, not start up and bring it down to meet the ball
Watch the way a player transfers the ball from the glove to the throwing hand.
Watch for good balance when throwing.
Watch for good follow through when throwing.
Keep the pace brisk and encourage the players to achieve the perfect game in only one or two tries.

Once the perfect game is achieved, congratulte the members of that team. If you reach the perfect game, keep going until an error is made, mark the score an try to improve upon it thereafter
