Two Pitch

By: Tom Hanson

This one drill does it all: batting practice, fielding practice, base running practice, cut-offs and relays, bunt coverage, teamwork, team spirit, discipline, and much more. I guess it doesn’t work your pitchers, but other than that it’s awesome.

1. Divide teams into two, three or four groups, depending on how many players you have available. One team is at bat, the other(s) take the field. You may choose to play with more than the usual number of defenders.

2. Have a coach or some other great strike thrower (like a machine) pitch from behind an L screen. A catcher is optional but nice to have.

3. Each team gets 3 outs, although we usually played they get two sets of three outs, clearing the bases after the first 3 outs. This saves transition time. After the side is fully retired the second team comes in to hit.

4. Each batter gets 2 PITCHES. No matter what. No matter what! He can’t strike out. Nor can he walk. He can be HBP. Only real outs made in the field count as outs.

5. You’ll want to adapt these rules to your taste and your situation.

6. Really encourage a lot of energy and hustle. Have fun, but have fun playing good hard baseball or you will reinforce bad habits.
